Eric Patton
In the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio, during the spring of 1978, Shawn Patton was given his father’s Stratocaster. Though he was unable to decide on whether he wanted to be Keith Richards or Jimmy Page, he did know that he would need a drummer. So as a big brother will do, he went and found his seven-year old brother, taught him how to count out a beat, and then made him do it. As it turns out, Eric was hooked from the start. Soon music was Eric’s first love. Burning through copies of his brother’s The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin albums, and stealing his mother’s The Beatles collection, Eric was quickly studying as much music as he could find. He spent the next ten years studying drums while playing in original bands with friends from school or cover bands with his brother. They played any gigs they could, from The Jockey Club and Bogart’s opening for national bands to Castle Skate Land playing for couple’s skate. Shortly after turning eighteen, Eric got word that some guys in town were starting a new band and needed a drummer. After many names, from “One Two Many” to “Ancient Chinese Secret”, they settled on The Webster’s and soon were tearing up the Cincinnati music scene. Over the next ten years, Eric played the Ohio club scene, and helped found several bands, including, the modern rock band Jonzei and the funk act Worldwide. Though many of the bands were successful in their own right, Eric became frustrated with the situations he had been in. He met a wonderful girl from Dayton, Ohio, went to work teaching drum lessons, and played whatever gigs came his way. One of those gigs came from some friends she had in Dayton who needed a drummer to fill-in for some shows. Glad to help, he was put in contact with David Lenda from a band called Slaphappy. The shows went well enough, but the band was already in good hands with their full-time member Craig Carroll behind the drums. Though very talented, Slaphappy was soon to go through several changes that included a new singer and a new name, Last Call. With the parting of Craig in 2006, the band found themselves in search of a new drummer. After a few calls were made, and a few drummers heard, the band decided on Eric’s heavy back-beat sound. Their personalities were a match from the start, and soon after their styles came together to form a sound that is quickly making Last Call one of the area’s premier bands. |
